PRE  CUT  CARS!

A Pinewood Derby is an appointment that an adult KEEPS with a Child to do something together.

S & W Crafts has been making Pinewood Derby Cars since 1957 [that’s probably before your were born]. We have always felt that an Adult should help the Child create the Car.

In the past few years we have had more and more phone calls from people asking the same question. How do I make a Car?

There was a time when most Public and many Private schools offered “Shop” Classes. Now, it seems that most young Adults never had the opportunity to take Wood Shop or Metal Shop, Print Shop, or Home Economics Classes.

You may want to get the Sanding Set and a Paint Kit to help make these Cars.

S & W  Crafts has been making the ONE CUT CAR since around 1991                                                          The One Cut Car is just that. The front of the Car has been cut at an angle.

This Car has been used for many years by-After School Programs, Church Fiestas, Boys and Girls Clubs, Parks and Recreation programs, School Science Classes, Company picnics. Birthday parties…………….Any time that the minimum number of tools, and the maximum amount of fun is needed.

All the Cars in Picture #1 were made at a Family Fiesta. Everyone started with the same ONE CUT CAR. The only “Tools” were S & W Crafts, Shaping Sticks, some Sandpaper, and felt tip pens.

The ONE CUT CAR PLUS, is the One Cut Car........ Plus, you get the piece of wood that was cut off. That little wedge shaped piece of wood can be glued to the back of the Car for an “Air Foil” look. Or glue it to the middle of the car. The choice is yours. Or your Childs.

The Car in picture #2 had the little wedge glued to the back of the Car so the wedge stuck out about 3/8 of an inch. [The directions that came with the S & W Crafts Car, says that the max. length for your Derby Car is 7 ˝” long]

Then, the concave cuts were made using a Round Shaping Stick, and the rounded edges were made with a Flat Shaping Stick.

Painting was fun to do: Using our Paint Kit, I put dime size drops of paint on the Car, then I swirled the paint with a toothpick.

The CURVE CUT CAR, has had the front cut with a Band Saw. [Each Car is cut one at a time and no two cars will be exactly the same. The piece of wood that was on the front can be glued to the back. The Car in picture#3 was sanded smooth,  painted white, and then the Decals were applied.

The FOUR CUT CAR has had the front Cut on a Radial Arm Saw, and then the back cut on a Radial Arm Saw. The sides are cut on a Table Saw. Picture #4

Sand your Car smooth and start painting. With this shape car it is easy to paint on a windshield, doors, windows, lights, fenders.

A good way to paint the Car, is to put newspaper on the kitchen table. Give the Child a Paint Kit, and leave the kitchen. It is amazing what children can do with paint.
